Andrew Krugly joins the podcast for a reflection on his education and nonprofit leader’s experience over decades in the innermost circles of education policy, administration and leadership. Topics range from Andrew’s principalship in a provocative Evanston, Illinois, elementary district to leading an early childhood education nonprofit in Chicago. Andrew speaks candidly about his unique perspective on what works and what fails in education, learning and neuroscience in practice today. Andrew began his education career in Illinois teaching grades two and four, quickly establishing himself as a talented and zealous educator. In 1992, Andrew was the recipient of the Kohl International Teaching Award, and served on the board of the Kohl Academy of Outstanding Educators.

Upon earning his Masters in Education Administration and Supervision, Andrew became an adjunct faculty member of the National-Louis University in Evanston, IL, and moved into an administrative role as Principal of Willow Creek Elementary School in 1994 (Woodridge School District 68).

Andrew served as the Principal at Dewey Elementary School in Evanston/Skokie School District 65 from 1998 to 2011. During his tenure at Dewey School, Andrew was a vanguard in behavioral and academic reform. He led sustained implementation of systemic reform including: the integration of a Spanish immersion program, the change in the Special Education service delivery model to one of inclusion, and the implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) and Response to Intervention (RTI)

Andrew successfully implemented these programs, leading to sustained increases in state test scores for all student subgroups over eight consecutive years. Additionally, Dewey School was named to the State Honor Roll in 2004 for Academic Improvement and was ranked #31 in the state by the Chicago Sun Times. In 2008, the Assistant Secretary for Special Education visited the school from Washington DC, and Dewey School was named an Illinois Honor Roll School for Academic Excellence. He also served as a National Leader and Mentor for the RTI Action Network.

In 2012 Andrew moved into the world of early childhood education and served as the Director of Education for the Educare Learning Network at the Ounce of Prevention Fund from 2012 to 2016. He also served as the Vice President of Education and Program Operations at Chicago Commons, where Pre-K Instructional Support CLASS scores have risen from a 2.65 to a 4.17 (on a 7-point scale) under his leadership.  Andrew is a certified CLASS (Classroom Assessment Scoring System) Observer and Trainer. As a nationally recognized presenter and consultant, he has trained at the Wipfli Annual National Training Conference, was a plenary speaker at the 2018 QRIS/BUILD confrence, and a panelist at the Chicago Early Childhood Education Summit. He also has been a keynote speaker at the regional PBIS Conference and the featured speaker at the NAESP Summer Conference.  He is a 2017 Barbara Bowman Leadership Fellow and is a member of the Illinois Early Learning Council.
